A DIAC (Diode for Alternating Current) is a two-terminal, bi-directional semiconductor that only conducts once its break-over voltage is exceeded. It exhibits negative dynamic resistance and switches rapidly, staying on until the current drops below its holding current. Operating symmetrically in both directions, DIACs are commonly used as trigger devices for TRIACs in dimmers and motor controllers.
